Restoring a guitar

Last week I was given a guitar that desperately needs to be fixed up! Here's the body as it stands at the moment:

guitar 1

So it's got the following things that I want to fix;
  1. There's a number 5 on the base that needs to be removed

  2. Volume knob and tone knob to be replaced

  3. Pickup switcher to be replaced

  4. The back pickup has had a humbucker jammed in

  5. Someone has tried to remove all of the paint on the guitar but hasn't got rid of the black around the edges

  6. There's a bunch of drill holes !

So anyway, I've taken everything off and started sanding it back:

guitar 2

and voila:

guitar 3

There's a very handy site here that I'm basing this work off.

Brisbane guitarist - Sam Vallen

I should have posted this ages ago.

Sam Vallen is a Brisbane guitarist with some amazing chops and technique - he plays in the progressive group named "Quandry". He's in the process of recording and releasing an EP titled "Caligula's Horse" with the singer from Arcane named Jim Grey. It should be quite a brilliant project - his playing and composition is really incredible. Here's a few examples:

Looking forward to the album!

New Dream Theater drummer - update

Ok, so after my "definitely it's most likely Minnemann" post, there's been a slight crack in my theory.

Hey everyone, it's spelt miNNemaNN. That's a whole lot of N's. It's going to take a while for everyone to get it right. Including me.

Turns out he might/sort of/kind not be available to record with DT in the studio right now.

Apparently Minnemann is recording with a band named Psyaxis, on Feb the 7th in Florida. But aren't DT meant to be recording their new album right now? Can they get it done before the 7th? I guess it's possible! But remember that Minnemann is a real studio recording drummer. If Psyaxis have all their stuff written he can probably record for them in a week or two and jump back to DT.

But further confusing the issue is the media release, which says that "Dream Theater's drummer Marco Minnemann is recording with Psyaxis". But he hasn't actually been confirmed yet. So is it a secretly recorded code? It is stupidity? Is someone just trying to mess with us? Is it a consipracy?

Unless all the rumours are wrong and it's actually Mike Mangini.

NO. I stand my ground. It's still Minnemann.

(PS: Hey, if you search for "Psyaxis Mineman" in google you get a googlewack because of the spelling error. Cool, that's my first on...

Who is the new Dream Theater Drummer? (Minneman I reckon)

So as you might have heard, Mike Portnoy is officially and completely out of Dream Theater. Who would have thought! Not me, that's for sure.

So who is the new drummer??

If I was to guess... I'd say Marco Minneman. Why?

1. He's a brilliant technical drummer and much much better than Portnoy. He's not just a great metal drummer, he's extremely inventive too and brilliant improviser.

2. He seems like a really nice guy. I've watched one of his drumming DVD's, and he's got a great sense of humour. Of course I could be wrong :)

3. He recently played a gig with Dream Theater keyboardist, Jordan Rudess.

4. He played with the Police, and Mike Mills (Toehider) thinks that the Police are awesome, and Mike knows what he's talking about.

5. There was a post on blabbermouth.net saying that "it's just a rumour"... but the post was pretty detailed :)

6. He's about the age of the rest of the guys in the band.

7. He's German, and Germans are cool.

8. He does great drumming faces.

9. He's also a great guitarist!!

10. He's not currently in a band. Sure he's playing with Kreator a bit and doing the occasional solo show - but he's available.

So of course it's going to be him!

And to which I say.... AWESOME!

I'm quite happy that Portnoy has left, I'm really sick of his bad singing... but more importantly I re...

Tommy Emmanuel - fiesta
Joe Satriani - always with me, always with you
The Shadows - apache
Duke Ellington - Caravan
Stevie Ray Vaughn - texas flood

But I need suggestions!!!!

Some new music for a very popular video...

I did some music for James Rolfe's latest video "The Dragon in my Dreams". I did the intro theme, and the music for the main scene at 5:26. This one was definitely a challenge but possibly the most rewarding I've ever done.

and here's the credit:
